Dew Drop Pond
A little newborn chick needs some place to test it’s feathers… It would get lost in a big pond, but a small puddle after a spring rain is a perfect place to play!
Studio Notes about the Design
This tiny accessory began with the idea that it would be really cute to give the baby chick from the 2015 “Sonny’s Surprise” ornament some water for it to splash around in.
However, those little, fuzzy feathers would quickly get lost in a big pond, so I thought a little puddle after a spring rain would be perfectly sized for this newborn!
I wanted a sense of fresh, clean, spring water, so I painted the water bottom Calypso blue and dusted it with a bit of sparkly, iridescent glitter.
Each little chick is suspended in the water by a small dowel that is painted to masquerade it before the clear, acrylic water is carefully poured to fill in the pond’s basin.
And, yes, if you were wondering, each little chick even has feet underwater!
The whole pond sits under a heat lamp for 24 hours, with frequent turning and checking for bubbles, to cure the acrylic water.
For such a tiny little accessory, it’s actually quite complicated!
